Cures for Winter Boredom

We’ve had a lot of time to play games over the past few months, with Winter’s icy grip upon us. Snow days are great fun, but when the wind starts to chill you, there’s nothing like slipping back inside to play a couple of games in front of the fire, while sipping your hot chocolate or tea!

The Orchard is a cooperative game that always pleases the younger kids—but sometimes it’s every man for himself! Pick-Up Sticks is an old favorite (you may know it as Shanghai, or Mikado as well), and the oversized set from Milaniwood proves to be just right for all ages: my parents-in-law even took a set back to Germany and spent New Year’s Eve playing it with their friends!

Milaniwood also makes a wooden Tic-Tac Toe game for one-on-one action. No more searching for pens and paper! And it’s so good looking—the pieces look like trees on a knoll—that we keep ours out on a side table for impromptu games.

But the game that causes the most hilarity is Catch Me! (which HABA makes in several sizes). One player is the “Cat”, trying to catch as many mice as possible with her cup; the “Mice” in turn try to pull their figures away by the tails before the cup descends. It’s fast, fun and I must confess, loud, with the house ringing with laughter and the clop of the cup against the table.
